The Roots Of Hatred

What I think primarily causes hatred is misunderstandings and assumptions. I say these two because I think generally people will assume about others and this leads to a misunderstandings which ignites hatred for one another. For example, when my teammates were arguing about a bad play in a championship basketball game. They both assumed it was each others fault which caused hatred between the two because they both started arguing. But it was only a misunderstanding about the play. This shows how this on a bigger scale can show the reason why nations or even races may not like each other because of assumptions and misunderstandings.

I think something we can do to reduce hatred in our world is stop making stereotypes about each other. I say that because stereotypes are basically ” an assumption or a misunderstanding.” I think what we can do is get to know each other because then we wont assume or misunderstand one another if we get to know that person. This could be finding the similarities and interests between us. Then we won’t hate that person and not evening knowing them. By doing this we can reduce hatred tremendously.

Basketball Tournament

Over the past weekend , my basketball team were down in the championship game and 2 of my teammates were arguing over a play that made us turn the ball over to the other team. This argument started because teammate A threw a bad pass to teammate B who dropped it when the ball was thrown. Teammate A said, “Catch the f—— ball next time yo!” Then teammate B said, “Next time don’t throw a b—s— pass!” I was on the court when this happened as my coach called a timeout because of this. I knew that arguing wasn’t going to help us win the game. I pulled them over and said ” Don’t get upset at each other over a pass. It was a misunderstanding of communication between you two. Arguing is not going to fix what just happened. You have to get over it and start the next play. Then teammate A and teammate B both apologized for their mistakes and we went back in the game to play.

What I did was successful because it stopped my teammates into making the argument bigger than what it already was. I think they acted the way they did because it was the championship game and we didn’t want to lose so, turning the ball over would only make it worse. I prevented a fight from happening over something as a misunderstanding. I calmed them both down and made them think about the mistakes they did and how it wouldn’t happen again. I resolved the situation because my teammates shouldn’t be arguing when we are trying to win a championship game.

Racial Controversy

In NY times , i read that there are incidents of racial issues have occurred on a college campus in San Jose. The incident was that three white students were physically and verbally abusing a black freshman. They called him slavery names and even reenacted slavery acts. In the
article , ” …. calling him names referring to slavery and putting a bicycle lock around his neck.” This seems hateful to me because those three white people know how deeply slavery impacted the African-American community back then. For these white people to bring it back up now , they were only going to get negative backlash because it’s hateful and offensive to the African-American.
I believe that the 3 white people did this hateful crime because they probably thought it was a joke. However, this did not portray as a joke because is was bullying. I believe they did this because he was a freshman at the college so they probably could get away with it. But, they knew that he was black and they were white so even that can cause some controversy. I think that they should’ve never bullied him and they knew the consequences.

Assumptions

Recently as a group of us BL students were on the bus on our way home from school, two old women made smart remarks while we were joking around and talking. One of them said, “I wish these d— kids shut up ! They don’t have no common sense on a bus. Always acting dumb and stupid.” The other one said, “They won’t ever have any sense!” It seemed hateful to meet because just cause you see a group of young black boys on a bus doesn’t mean you can assume that we are uncontrollable and illiterate. How can you make an assumption on us students saying we’re not behaved or act out of hand ?

In my opinion I think that people take stereotypes about other races or nationalities way out of hand. I say that because I think people see a group of African American males together and think we’re up to no good. That is not always the case because I think we do have self-control and know how to act in public with other people. The two old women shouldn’t scold us because they think we behave a certain way which is not true. I think they said this because of other experiences they probably had with young black males on the bus. But, we are not all or act the same.

” White Face vs Black Face “

I heard that people are actually saying that Nick Cannon who painted his face “white” was very offensive to some of the white community. It seems hateful to me that some people would say this is derogatory. If they was really trying to say something was offensive , shouldn’t they have checked themselves first ? Some people see this as “humor” rather than hatred saying it was only a mere joke. I think Nick Cannon was doing all out of a joke. I mean who would want to spark racial controversy ?
I believe that people are so judge mental because white people have used “black face” to insult black people. How can you say something is wrong when you did it yourself ? White people can’t say what Nick Cannon did was wrong when they did it for entertainment back in the 1900s ridiculing a specific race and culture. Also , The Waynes Brothers did it in their movie “White Chicks” and no one had a problem so , why would they be now ? I think that white people should stop being hateful and sensitive .

Body Image

Some time ago, I heard and witnessed somebody calling someone else weak based on his physical appearance in school. It seemed hateful to me because how can you assume what a person is based on what is shown on the outside. The person said ” Your weak as —- ! , you cant even carry them books !” and then he smacked the books right out of his hands. Then he walked away and the guy pick up his books to go to his class. I thought that wasn’t right because he wouldn’t want the same thing to happen to him. Also , you can’t always tell someones strength or ability based on their outward figure.
In my opinion , all people who are “leaned figured” are not weak physical. I think people who assume this are completely wrong. For example , NBA star Kevin Durant is “lean” and is not husky or very muscular but, is very strong. He drives and plays defense against some of the strongest NBA players like Dwight Howard or Lebron James and does perfectly fine. The whole stereotype of how you need to gain muscle to become stronger is nonsense because it is not always necessary. I think that person might have said that to the other person because he probably didn’t even know that person. He also probably wanted to mess with him because he was more muscular than him. I think people are always judgmental of others physical appearance without even getting to know them in this society today.
